LONDON: The 2012 Summer Olympics in London will be the 'Greenest Games in History', the event's organisers promised on Tuesday as they launched a sustainable development strategy.

British Prime Minister Tony Blair joined in the calls, writing in The Guardian daily that the organisers should "aspire to be the greenest games of the modern era," with 2,012 days left before the event's opening ceremony.

"The enduring success of the games is measured in the years that follow, not in the time it takes for them to take place ... We will use sustainable building methods, renewable energy and low-emission transport, all with the purpose of reducing the carbon footprint," Blair wrote.

The prime minister is also hosting a seminar at his Downing Street office, along with London Mayor Ken Livingstone and the minister responsible for the Olympics Tessa Jowell, to endorse the Olympic Delivery Authority's (ODA) strategy.

The ODA, responsible for creating the Olympic venues and infrastructure, has pledged to cut carbon emissions linked to the Olympic Park and other venues by 50 percent, more than the 44 percent reduction required by new regulations due to be introduced in 2013.

Other measures to be put in place include lowering waste, green transportation, and the high re-use of materials during the construction of the venues.

"Ensuring a sustainable approach to building the games will help ensure London 2012 is remembered not only as two weeks of fantastic sporting action, but also as the 'Greenest Games' to date," said ODA chief executive David Higgins.
