TINSUKIA (Assam): Three persons were killed and 15 were injured in a grenade blast triggered by suspected United Liberation Front of Asom militants in Assam's Tinsukia district on Saturday.

Officials said the insurgents hurled a grenade at around 6.15 pm near Tirupati Hotel at the busy Chamber Road in the main commercial centre here, injuring four persons.

Immediately after the blast, shopkeepers downed shutters and people fled the area, they said.

The area was cordoned off by police and the injured were admitted to Tinsukia Civil Hospital, the officials said.

Tinsukia was one area where the ULFA recently targeted Hindi-speaking migrants in attacks that left 70 people dead.

In an effort to beef up security in Assam ahead of the forthcoming National Games, the Centre sent 2,000 additional paramilitary personnel rushed to the violence-hit state.

The fresh deployment of 20 more companies of Central forces has been made for internal security duties and to ensure peaceful National Games next month, a spokesman of the Ministry of Home Affairs said in New Delhi.

The deployment is in addition to the 30 companies of paramilitary forces dispatched to the state recently in the wake of killing of 70 non-Assamese migrant labourers, mostly from Bihar, by ULFA militants.
