RS Gill replaces Virk as Punjab DGP

RS Gill was on Saturday appointed Director General of Police of Punjab in place of SS Virk.

NEW DELHI: RS Gill was on Saturday appointed Director General of Police of Punjab in place of SS Virk.

Earlier in the day, Virk was transferred by the Election Commission "in the interest" of conducting free and fair assembly polls next month.

Gill was Director of Punjab Police Academy at Phillaur.

The Commission has ordered the transfer of Virk, saying that in the recent period, substantial concerns have been raised regarding his credibility and perceived neutrality in the forthcoming polls in the state.

After the EC order the Punjab government had recommended names of three senior IPS officers -- RS Gill, Mohd Izhar Alam and KK Attri.

The names were sent directly to the EC as per the poll authority's instructions.
