MUMBAI: Four persons, including a woman, were arrested with 6.5 kg of the explosive substance trinitrotoluene (TNT) in North West Mumbai in the wee hours of Saturday, a senior police official said.

"They were arrested with the TNT at Andheri following a tip off. We suspect them to be explosive runners who could have been entrusted with delivering the consignment to a local contact," Additional Commissioner of Police (West Region) VK Choubey said.

He added that prima facie, the four do not seem to be associated with any organised crime syndicate.

The arrested have been identified as Sakhu Gaikwad, Gautam Telore, Sanjay Pawar and Harishchandra Telore, hailing from different places in Maharashtra's Nashik district, he added.

Acting on a tip-off, a police team from the DN Nagar Police Station arrested the four from a bus stop located next to the Andheri railway station in the early hours, the police said.

An investigating officer in the case said that Sakhu Gaikwad, the woman, had contacts with criminals in Mumbai and has also helped in getting bail for many murder accused. She used to make frequent visits to Mumbai, he said.

This is the first time that TNT, used in making bombs and other explosives, has been recovered from any person in such high quantity in the city, Bihari said.
