MUMBAI: Maharashtra's State Election Commission stayed polls to 27 Zilla Parishads and 310 Panchayat Samitis slated next month.

Earlier, the Supreme Court's dismissed a special leave petition filed by the commission.

The apex court dismissed the petition, following a plea made by the SEC that it would like to withdraw it and move the high court by way of a review petition, official sources said here.

State Election Commissioner, Nandlal was unavailable for comments but an SEC official told reporters here that the commissioner will comment on the ruling only after receiving court papers.

Nandlal has faced growing criticism from  various quarters over the SEC's decision to declare elections to the state Zilla Parishads keeping the high court in dark.

The SEC had made an affidavit before the Aurangabad bench of the Bombay High Court in August, saying it will let the court know of any elections it proposed to hold.

The high court was hearing a writ petition filed by Aurangabad Zilla Parishad Building and Construction Committee Chairperson Prashant Bam, challenging the SEC's decision on implementing reservations to various elected posts in Zilla Parishads on "rotation" basis.

On October 3, 2006, the high court set aside the reservations as declared by the SEC.

The commission then filed an appeal in the Supreme Court, following which the SC granted a two-week stay on the high court decision.

However, on Wednesday the SEC withdrew the special leave petition in the SC and was granted permission to approach the HC again.
