NEW DELHI: Attempts are on to build the bridges of peace between India and Pakistan.

Pranab Mukherjee is in Islamabad this weekend to establish a new set of diplomatic associations, while Manmohan Singh may be envisaging a dream to seal a peace pact between the two countries sooner than later.

But, while every relationship with Pakistan is being talked about in future tense, interestingly the only channel of communication that never ceases to function between the two neighbours is that between the weather departments.

As per guidelines set up by the World Meteorological department, India and Pakistan share every piece of worthy information on weather and climatic changes at all times.

“Even during Kargil when all communication links between the countries had come to a halt, the weathermen in both India and Pakistan were in touch on a daily basis,” informs an official at the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD).

Information about the recent cold wave that gripped northern India came through Pakistan as the cool north westerlies blew over north Pakistan into India. “The freezing of the Dal Lake and the entire northern cold wave is the result of weather development across the border. We have daily bulletins on weather which are up for consumption for officials of both countries,” informs the official.

Apart from these daily bulletins there are also high-level exchanges that take place between weather departments of both countries frequently through global telecommunication systems.

India being the Region Specialized Meteorological Centre, it is incumbent on New Delhi to share all cyclone bulletins with Pakistan. “It is our responsibility as we take care of all cyclone related inputs as far as all panel countries including Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Myanmar are concerned. We issue advisories on a regular basis to these countries,” adds the official.
