MUMBAI: The 16th day of year’s racing at the Mahalaxmi Race Course will be long remembered as only one favourite obliged in a card of nine. This left the punters and the followers of the horse burn their fingers as only Desert Dust, the public’s choice, won the second race, on a day which began with two boltings and an accident.
The third race of the day was the most eventful. Two horses stumbled over each other injuring jockey P Belose atop Striking Out. It was in the Specialist Plate Division I run over a distance of 1000 metres. Beaming, who was placed fourth, stumbled at the 800 metre mark with Striking Out just behind. Belose, who is stated to be out of danger, suffered a collar bone fracture.
It was a day of unfancied horses. In the feature event, The Nitco Million, on-money favourite Open Opinion failed to show signs of the gelding coming from the stable of champion trainer S Ganapathy. As the 13 horses settled down in this 1400m run, Open Opinion was among the first three until the home stretch, but fizzled out with the Hurricane hitting the front with 200m to go. Labuan and Open Opinion had to settle for the second and third positions respectively.
The winner is owned by Shapoor Mistry, Munshi P Shroff, Dinsha P Shroff and K Dada Chanji.
