NEW DELHI: CBI has registered an FIR against a Ministry of Defence official for allegedly supplying sensitive information to the representatives of the news website Tehelka.com.

P Sasi, chargesheeted last month in the corruption case exposed by Tehelka.com in 2001 related to defence procurements, is the accused in the case lodged under the Official Secrets Act.

The FIR alleges that Sasi while posted as Assistant in the Directorate-General of the Ordinance Services in the Ministry of Defence provided relevant information relating to procurement of various defence products including Hand-Held Thermal Imagers (HHTIs) to the functionaries of the news and views portal Tehelka.com.

The functionaries of the portal then conducted a sting operation acting under assumed identities of a London-based fictitious firm Westend International, says the FIR.

They held several meetings during September 2000 to December 2000 in which Sasi allegedly provided as many as eleven documents including a had-written note on likely requirement of ammunition for 2001-02, Acceptance Test Plans and copy of a letter visualizing security threat to Operation Research Group (ORG).

These documents contained sensitive information and were likely to affect security and interests of the State.

The documents were subsequently produced by Aniruddha Behl, an editor of the news portal, before the Venkataswamy Commission of Inquiry, says the complaint.

The probe agency had filed the sixth chargesheet in the Tehelka case, against him under the Prevention of Corruption Act, for allegedly accepting Rs 80,500 while passing on certain sensitive documents and also promising to exercise personal influence over the senior officials of the ministry.
