Ulhasnagar always remains in the news. For wrong reasons, though. A 38-year-old resident has been arrested for allegedly sending life-threatening letters to the President and the Prime Minister. This is second such incident where a person was arrested for sending such letter.

Manohar Bhagchandani, a Bevas Chowk resident, was arrested from a courier shop, near the State Bank of India on Wednesday after the police laid a trap. Businessman Lakhu Budhrani lodged a complaint about an unknown person who had been trying trying to defame him for the last four months by sending “indecent messages and pictures” of him and his family to others.

On August 21, Bhagchandani allegedly called the Ulhasnagar police station posing as Budhrani’s wife and said that bombs had been placed in CHM College, Ashok Talkies and the State Bank of India. He then sent two threatening letters on September 31 to the Prime Minister and the President’s offices in Budhrani’s name.

He also allegedly wrote letters to Mumbai Police Commissioner AN Roy and the Anti-Corruption Bureau, while using Budhrani and his business partner Veer Budhrani’s address. Bhagchandani also distributed defamatory material about Budhrani’s wife and daughter. On December 23, when Congress chief Sonia Gandhi was in the city, Bhagchandani called the police anonymously and informed them about a bomb being carried by a bodyguard. “We alerted public telephone booth owners, xerox machine operators and courier agencies to inform us immediately if they fond any person involved in such activities,” said Sr PI Suryakant Gaikwad.

On Wednesday, a courier agency alerted the police about a person carrying five letters addressed to different police stations. The police then arrived and took one Raju
Bhagwat into custody. Raju told the police  Bhagchandani had given him Rs50 to send the letters. When Bhagwat did not return after making his delivery, Bhagchandani called the agency.

The police spoke to Bhagchandani and then arrested him from his residence the same day.

“Bhagchandani is mentally unstable and has confessed to sending all letters and making bomb hoax calls several times. He said he was a friend of Budhani’s once. But after their relationship turned sour, he wanted to spoil his name,” said Gaikwad.
