NEW DELHI: The chairman of the National Knowledge Commission (NKC) Sam Pitroda is surprised that his colleague P M Bhargava chose the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas to vent out his anger against him. “I wish he (Bhagava) had spoken to me first,” Pitroda told DNA on the sidelines of Pravasi Bharatiya Divas.

“I am surprised by the way Bhargava has reacted. Shouldn’t he have talked to me before going public about a problem? There is a process before the reports are submitted. The working group submits its report which is circulated amongst all members. There are discussions on the report and all views are incorporated. If reports were not sent to him then he should have checked up with the office staff,” Pitroda clarified.

Bhargava, the vice-chairman of National Knowledge Commission, has complained that his opinion is not being taken on several reports of the Commission and he had no knowledge of its functioning. According to Bhargava his views had been sought for only on e-governance and translation which were submitted in January 2006.

While refusing to accept there were any ego clashes among the members of NKC, Pitroda said that it was unanimously agreed that each member having expertise in the particular field would prepare the blueprint related to the subject. “Since Deepak Nayyar has the experience of being in the university system he was given to responsibility to prepare the blueprint for higher education. Similarly, Dr Jayati Ghosh was given the task for language policy,” Pitroda said.

“We in NKC are set to give our views on what is good for India. But I guess, things do not happen unanimously always. Dr Jayati and Bhargava had voted in favour of having reservations in education while rest of the members opposed it. I respected that. In fact, Pratap (Bhanu Mehta) and Andre Beteille, resigned as a signal of protest against the government’s decision to implement reservation, I respected their sentiments too.”

“But I think, at some point I have to put my foot down. You need an alligators’ skin to handle all this as it’s a highly political situation,” Pitroda added.
