NEW DELHI: The political ambitions of Rahul Mahajan, son of late Pramod Mahajan, may have got aborted. But it’s about time for a “real” son rise in the main Opposition party, the BJP.

Amit Singh alias Pankaj, the son of BJP chief Rajnath Singh, is all set to enter politics through grassroots and also test his own strength by contesting elections from some non-descript rural assembly constituency in the ensuing UP polls in March.

Amit’s brother-in-law and ace shooter, Jaspal Rana too is ready to take the plunge. He is aspiring to contest Parliamentary elections from Tehri-Garwal and now the by-poll for the same constituency is likely to be clubbed with the UP assembly elections by the Election Commission.

Amit is married to Jaspal’s younger sister, Sushma Rana, herself an ace shooter and winner of a gold medal in Commonwealth Games.

While both Jaspal and Amit could merit parliamentary and assembly tickets on their own youthful strength, Rajnath Singh may risk charges of promoting his own family in the party.

An MBA from a known institute, Amit, 29, preferred his father’s chosen vocation than joining a corporate house. He has so far withstood the temptation and “popular pressure” to contest parliamentary or assembly polls, but this time he is doing the right homework to take a plunge into it when assembly polls are held in UP.

While he and party strategists are yet to zero the most appropriate constituency for him, sources said Chiraigaon, near holy city of Benaras, or Fatehpur near Allahabad could be the one such place. Former Prime Minister VP Singh had representated the constituency during his stint as the chief minister of UP.

Though Amit has made occasional presence at the party headquarters at 11 Ashoka Road and remained on the sidelines of the National Executive and Council, but is conscious that at this stage too much of visibility at such places would not be very healthy for him. He is trying other options, like youth mobilisation in favour of the BJP in rural and sub-urban areas of UP. The idea is to cover most of over 400 assembly segments in the state. This would help the state unit of the BJP propose his name for the assembly polls.  There could be a last minute slip if Rajnath Singh fears that fielding his son would bring the charge of dynastic politics to his doorstep.

But, some BJP partymen feel that the issue was no longer valid. The Congress had too many examples of dynastic politics but even in the BJP, the two daughters of late Vijayraje Scindia, Vasundhra Raje and Yasodhra Raje were there. Vasundhra Raje is chief minister of Rajasthan and her son is an MP and Yashodhra Raje is a minister in MP.
