CBI moves to extradite Feroz Abdul Rashid Khan, who attended Dubai terror meet

NEW DELHI/MUMBAI: A key accused in the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts case, Feroz Abdul Rashid Khan, has been tracked down in the US. The government, which received information about Khan from the US, is preparing to have him extradited. India has a full-fledged extradition treaty with the US.

OP Chhatwal, deputy inspector-general, CBI, said, “We have sought official confirmation of Khan’s identity and sent the necessary documents to the US.” Chhatwal said the CBI will initiate further action once it receives a confirmation.

Investigations have begun to ascertain if Khan, who was earlier reported to be in Dubai, acquired US citizenship after moving there. He was a key conspirator in the terror attack that killed 257 people and injured 713.

CBI records show that Khan was present at the Dubai meetings organised by gangster Dawood Ibrahim, said to be the mastermind of the blasts, to plan the bombings. Besides being privy to the conspiracy, Khan is believed to have connived with Abu Salem to smuggle explosives and arms into India in January 1993. Interpol issued a red-corner notice for him in 1994.

Sources said the CBI forwarded Khan’s dossier — containing such information as fingerprints and photographs — to the Americans after receiving the latest lead.

Khan’s expeditious detention could afford a significant advantage to the investigators. The special TADA court hearing the case is shortly expected to pronounce the sentences of those who have been convicted.
