KOLKATA: Taking exception to the allegation of Ratan Tata that rival business forces were behind the Singur movement, the Trinamool Congress on Tuesday threatened to sue the Tata Group chairman and bring a privilege motion against him in the West Bengal Assembly.

''We have set a seven-day deadline for Mr Tata to either prove what he said or tender an apology. Otherwise we will file a defamation suit in the court and move a privilege motion against him in the Assembly,'' leader of the Opposition Partha Chatterjee said after a meeting of party legislators and former legislators.

Tata had told NDTV in an interview that a competitor of Tata Motors was fuelling the opposition movement against land acquisition at Singur to delay execution of the small car project.

Pointing out that though party chief Mamata Banerjee had withdrawn her hunger strike, Chatterjee said the Trinamool Congress would continue the agitation on the issue and a decision had been taken to extend the movement to district level.
