What you get: A Bentley to pick up and drop you, Welcome drink at the Harbour Bar in the Taj Mahal hotel, Three-course dinner cooked by Chef Hemant Oberoi , Overnight stay on board, A butler and a DJ to yourself, Breakfast and an exclusive gift hamper.

It’s time to draw the party lines. While some of us are wondering whose house is big enough and how to budget, Mumbai’s true-blue party-goers will be ringing in the New Year at some very exclusive and expensive dos.

For those craving exclusivity and privacy, and able to put up the moolah, Taj Mahal hotel is offering a package of Rs2 lakh a couple. For a Bentley to pick up the couple, a welcome drink at the Harbour Bar, a three-course dinner cooked by Chef Hemant Oberoi at the Taj Luxury yacht and an overnight stay on board. Plus a personal butler and DJ. The outing ends with breakfast and an exclusive gift hamper.

The hotel is also offering luxury packages for Rs1 and Rs1.5 lakh, per couple, which include a Mercedes pick-up and drop and a night’s stay in an executive suite. The difference is the former gets you a six-course dinner at Casablanca while the latter has a nine-course dinner at Zodiac Grill.

For the set which likes to party, the two international hotel chains, JW Marriott and Grand Hyatt, are slugging it out with ultra-big bashes. Marriott’s ‘Jewel 2007’ party boasts Mallika Sherawat while Hyatt’s ‘The Pirates of the Arabian’ will have DJs Nikhil Chinappa and Pearl spinning music.

For Rs18,000 a couple, Marriott will have various party zones and food stations serving up Indonesian, Vietnamese, Assador (Mexican cowboy cuisine), Greek, Venetian and Moroccan cuisine. “The Jewel 2007 concept comes from the fact that we believe India is the jewel in Marriott’s crown,” says Jason Nuell, director of operations. After six months of planning, the extravaganza will have a 30-minute performance by Sherawat (for which she’s charging Rs50 lakh), performances by an Australian dance troupe, an international music band and three DJs.

Cheaper than Marriott, but no less ostentatious, the Grand Hyatt has recreated a pirate ship in its ballroom. The upper deck costs Rs90,000 for a table for 10 while the charge for the lower deck is Rs10,000 per couple. Indian and Arabian cuisine will be on offer.

“We are creating whisky corners, tequila corners, beer corners and juice corners. So, you won’t have to wait to get your drink,” says Grand Hyatt, spokesperson.

There are no limits to what money can buy in Mumbai. Even if it is for just one night of fun.
