City Muslims vent their anger at the unseemly haste in executing former Iraqi president Saddam Hussein

City Muslims have expressed their disappointment at the unseemly haste in executing former Iraqi president Saddam Hussein, convicted for the killing of 148 Shiites in Dujail. Here are some reactions:

Dr Asghar Ali Engineer, Chairman, Centre for Study of Society and Secularism
It is inhuman to hang anybody on the holy occasion of Eid. They have shown indecent hurry. The trial wasn’t fair. The trial of the murders of Kurds in Karbala is still pending and they have hanged him. Al Qaida will take revenge and more innocent people will be killed.

Samar Khadas, Muslim intellectual
Everybody should condemn Saddam’s execution. The trial held against Saddam in Iraq was a sham. Why did they not try him for the genocide of Kurds in the Anfal campaigns?

Maulana Mehmood Daryabadi, Secretary, Ullema Council of India
This execution will intensify the hatred of Muslims towards Americans and increase terrorism. We agree Saddam killed a lot of people. But since the time US attacked Iraq over 640,000 lakh Iraqis have been killed. When will Bush be held responsible?

Maulana Bunai Noaim Hasani, Sunni leader and president of Wahadit Millat
Saddam may have been convicted of crimes against humanity. But what has been done to him is unpardonable. This is the time for Haj and Eid celebrations and they have tried to make this into a time for mourning.
