MUMBAI: The benchmark Sensex recovered by over 82 points in early trading on the last session of the year 2006 on selective buying by funds and retail investors.
The 30-share-index (Sensex), which ended in negative zone with a modest fall of over 13 points on Thursday, was up by 82.76 points at 13,929.10 in the first five minutes of trading with funds buying blue chip stocks
Similarly, the wide-based National Stock Exchange index, Nifty, gained 21 points at 3,991.55.
Marketmen said beginning of January contract in the Futures and Options segment and expectations that corporates would come out with better third quarter results helped improve sentiments.
Major gainers were HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, State Bank of India, Reliance Industries, Infosys Technologies, Tata Consultancy, Satyam Computers, Wipro, BHEL, HDFC Ltd, Grasim Tata Motors, Hero Honda and Larsen & Toubro.
