With one foot firmly planted in classical music, Pandit Hari Prasad Chaurasia has eclectically experimented with various genres, including Bollywood.

After composing hugely successful melodies for films like SilsilaLamhe and Chandni, (His last was Darr in 1993) he has now scored music for yet another film called Magic Loom Girl.

“I’ve been in the industry for the past four decades and have always chosen only those projects that I’m completely convinced about. This film has a very interesting storyline,” he says.

“The film has been shot in a contemporary rural set up in Madhya Pradesh,” elaborates Smita Kudva, the director of the film, whose association with Chaurasia goes back several decades, when she was a child.

“I have travelled with him extensively and played the tanpura for his concerts. I’m also planning a film on him and have already finished the 30 minute promo,” she adds.

Chaurasia’s music room Gurukul is a cherished treasure and he is justifiably proud of his music school which has become the launching pad for many Indian and international musicians.

Balancing his multiple roles as teacher, composer and performer, he’s already in the middle of his next project. “I’m working on my next album which will have shlokas in Sanskrit and it should be out early next year,” he says.

The master flautist nostalgically recalls the hundreds of unbreakable relationships that blossomed in his Gurukul as well as unforgettable memories of working with people like Yash Chopra and Amitabh Bachchan — a couple of his favourite people.

“Amitabh wanted me to compose a song for him. I told him I would do so only if his father wrote the lyrics. Amitabh convinced his father and ‘Rang Barse’ was born. It is still played on every Holi,” he signs off with a laugh.
