KOLKATA: Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee, on a hunger strike for 23 days on Singur issue, on Tuesday took ill and was put on respiratory support even as Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee ruled out going back on the Tatas' project and dubbed as "irresponsible" the behaviour of the opposition party.

Banerjee was put on oxygen support following breathing trouble after her condition "further deteriorated today and her family doctors examined her at the site where she is holding a sit-in", Trinamool Congress General Secretary Mukul Roy said.

He, however, said the Trinamool supremo continued her fast.

"Doctors are monitoring her condition. We are all concerned about her health", said Roy.

Banerjee has refused to be treated by doctors sent by West Bengal government in the past few days.

Addressing an apex body of commerce and industries, Bhattacharjee said the government was determined to go ahead with the Tatas' project.

"Ratan Tata told me that Singur was the preferred site for the project. How can I say no to him? I cannot tell Ratan Tata to go back. We must go ahead," the Chief Minister said while speaking at the annual general meeting of Bengal Chamber of Commerce & Industry.

The Chief Minister also voiced his anger at the behaviour of Trinamool Congress saying "how can a government function with an irresponsible Opposition".

Mamata went on hunger strike demanding re-location of the plant from Singur's multi-crop land to any other area in the state which was not so fertile.

Bhattacharjee said he was ready to discuss anything under the sun with Banerjee and also urged her to call off the fast.
