In the run-up to the New Year, the city glitterati are a frowning lot. With four plush restaurants and lounges in the Capital coming under the sealing ambit, there are limited options left before the crowd to throw or attend a New Year’s party.

The past two weeks witnessed the sealing of AD Singh’s Olive bar and kitchen, besides Thai Wok at Ambavatta complex, Calypso at Hauz Khas and Nasha restaurants. As a result, while Christmas bookings were virtually cancelled and last minute arrangements being made at five stars, the New Year’s eve party is being discussed with a great deal of worry.

At Olive, while the Christmas bookings were cancelled, host Singh is desperately looking for an alternative place to carry on the New Year’s celebrations, as cancellation of reservations at this point could prove to be disastrous. “I had already decided to go to Olive as the ambience is perfect. Now it will be impossible to get reservations at any other place just a week before New Year’s,” says Neha Grewal, a model.

Besides all thiss, the swish set is also bemoaning the closure of designer stores at Kimaya, where Tarun Tahiliani, Malini Ramani and Ritu Beri had their shops.

Though AD Singh, Pradeep Hirani (owner of Kimaya), Ramani and others all sound suitably indignant and annoyed with the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), they also swear on the authenticity of their properties. “We have all the necessary licenses and clearances by the MCD, DDA and the ASI (Archeological Survey of India) for our properties.

Our lawyers read the fine print carefully before we invested in these areas,” says Hirani. On the other hand, the MCD does not seem to be impressed by these tall claims. “These are powerful people but we are just following orders. All illegal establishments will be shut,” said a senior official at the MCD.

But for now, ‘Where’s the party tonight?’ remains the eternal question.
