MUMBAI: A notorious robber was killed in an encounter with the police near Diamond Garden at Chembur in the eastern suburbs on Saturday evening.

The deceased Suresh Gandappa Poojari is believed to be related to gangster Ravi Poojari. He was wanted in several cases of robbery, murder and extortion, including an unsuccessful bank robbery attempt in Navi Mumbai this year in which a police sub-inspector was killed.

The Crime Branch Detection VI had received information that Suresh Poojari would be coming to Diamond Garden to meet his associates. Police had laid a trap and spotted the goon in a car at 1700 hours.

Upon establishing his identification, Suresh Poojari was asked to surrender but he opened two rounds of fire upon the police instead. The police team also opened fire in retaliation and Suresh Poojari was injured on the head and chest. He was rushed to the civil hospital but the doctors declared him dead before admission.
