Gandhi addressed Congress workers at Dadar's Shivaji Park in the afternoon, while the NCP rally was at Shanmukhananda Hall in Matunga.

Gandhi arrived to launch the party's campaign for the municipal corporation elections scheduled across the state in February.

Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil, Union Minority Affairs Minister AR Antulay, Mumbai Congress chief Gurudas Kamat and other senior party leaders as well as members of Parliament were also present at the rally.

Commuters in Bandra-Kurla area too faced hardships as some roads were closed to allow President Kalam's cavalcade to proceed towards the Bandra-Kurla Complex, the business district in western Mumbai.
