LUCKNOW: Lucknow University Vice-Chancellor R P Singh on Saturday faced criticism over his reported statement that flesh trade and drug peddling were going on in the campus, which he has denied.

Stating that he never accused students and employees of running prostitution and drug peddling rackets on campus, Singh told reporters that such activities were going on in the "illegal encroachment" in the campus premises and he had received several complaints in this regard from the faculty.

Those making an issue of this by misinterpreting what Singh had said in an affidavit before the Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court on December 21 were only helping unscruplous elements, who wanted to dilute university's tirade against criminal elements, university spokesman Dr Manoj Dixit said.

The university would continue its attempts to get the illegal encroachments removed from the campus, Dixit added.

The V-C in his affidavit submitted in the high court had claimed that illegal activities including flesh trade and drug peddling were going on in the illegal encroachments in the university premises leading to a hue and cry by a section of teachers, employees and students.

The employees association on Saturday boycotted their duties to protest V-C's remark which they said had maligned the image of the university.

Former students' union president and Samajwadi Party MLC Rakesh Singh Rana said that instead of making such a statement the V-C should have tried to check the practices, if any.
