KOLKATA: Shortly after the High Court on Wednesday directed Trinamool Congress to withdraw its 48-hour West Bengal strike call from Thursday, party chief Mamata Banerjee announced its postponement “for the time being”. “We have postponed the 48-hour strike, but whether we will go for it again, will depend on the Left Front government’s decision on our party’s demand for returning forcibly acquired farmland at Singur for the Tata Motors small car project,” Banerjee, who is on a hunger strike, said.

However, she said she would continue with her hunger strike, which entered 17th day, “till the state government returns the forcibly acquired farmland at Singur” to the farmers. The Trinamool supremo’s decision came within an hour of the Calcutta High Court directing the party to call off the strike. The court directive followed a PIL. Banerjee did not refer to the High Court order but said her party decided to postpone the strike on the request from the Christian community in view of Christmas. “We always respond to mass appeal. Every festival is our festival and so we decided to postpone our strike call.”

Referring to Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattcharjee’s letter to her on December 8 urging her to call off her hunger-strike, Banerjee said “I replied to it immediately, but so far I have received no communication from him.” She said she had sent the leader of the Opposition Partha Chatterjee with another letter to the chief minister. “We sent a letter to him urging him to return forcibly acquired farmland to farmers at Singur and giving the Tatas low and marshy land for their car project,” she said.

Under no circumstance, should the government allot agricultural land to the Tatas, she added.
