JAMSHEDPUR: Former Indian pacer Chetan Sharma on Wednesday lambasted the Indian team for the "pathetic" show in the one-day series against South Africa and said Virender Sehwag should be dropped if he continued to flop in the Test series.

"When a player like Ganguly can be dropped on the ground of non-performance, why not Sehwag who has miserably failed in the one-day series," said Sharma, who holds the distinction of claiming a hat-trick in the World Cup.

Sharma, who was here in connection with a talent search contest organised by UK-based company 'Investors in Cricket', expressed his happiness at Sourav Ganguly returning to form in the warm-up game ahead of the Tests.

"Ganguly will strive to prove the selectors who omitted him wrong. He still has cricket left in him," Sharma said.

But Sharma found fault with the national selectors for preferring Suresh Raina over Ganguly in the one-day series in South Africa.

"Had I been a selector, I would have opted for Ganguly," he said, pointing out that the experienced left-hander had scored more than 15000 runs in his international career.

Asked how he rated Rahul Dravid as skipper following the recent performance of the team, Sharma said the captain has to be aggressive to bring out the best from his players.

"Ganguly had that agressive leadership quality and knew how to extract the best from his team," he said.

Regarding M S Dhoni, Sharma said the stumper had enough potential, but lacked patience. "I want to see him play for the country for the next ten years as he has the quality,"

Sharma regretted that the opening slot in the Indian team remained an area of concern before the World Cup.

He defended Coach Greg Chappell, saying the Aussie could not go out and perform if the players failed.
