MUMBAI: About 20 Hindi film stars have been asked to submit details of international stage shows they have participated in. The demand has gained urgency after Aishwarya Rai was investigated for a parcel containing an undisclosed sum of 23,000 euros addressed to her.
The Enforcement Directorate has directed actors like Akshay Kumar, Dino Morea, Bipasha Basu, Javed Jaffrey to submit particulars of the shows they participated in and payments received.
A senior ED officer told DNA: “We stumbled upon the detailed payment list of three particular stage shows organised by Manun Thakur, an Andheri-based event management firm, which was raided in November 2005. Since January 2006, directives have been issued to actors.”
Rai’s counsel, Girish Kulkarni, said the actress’s office had received no such notice. “We have no information about the documents and information recovered by the ED about some stage shows in 2004 for which payments were allegedly made in 2003. In any case, in 2003 there was no law on money laundering in India.”
When questioned, Thakur allegedly told ED officers that payments to the actors were made directly by the Dubai-based events management firm that had contracted them. In fact, though one of the shows was cancelled, payments close to Rs50 lakh were received by Rai and other stars. ED officers say these payments were made via the havala route.
The ED may summon the actors in another 10 days.
It’s all about the money

- The ED has also sought details of the actors’ income-tax returns from the I-T department, and transaction details from their banks
- An ED officer said: “If they fail to provide details of the three specific events of which we have documentary evidence, the ‘havala’ transaction would be exposed.”
- The official said Akshay Kumar has already responded to the ED with his income details
