MOHALI: A solid 133-run sixth wicket stand between Amol Muzumdar (86 not out) and William Mota (74) helped Mumbai reach 272 for 6 against Punjab on the third day of the Ranji Trophy Elite B match at PCA Stadium on Monday. The visitors still trail Punjab by 81 runs, with the hosts having scored 353 in the first innings.

Muzumdar is the only hope for Mumbai as the team is left with tailenders to thwart Punjab’s attack. In his unbeaten 86, the Mumbai batsman hit seven boundaries.

The partnership between Mazumdar and Mota was broken by Ishan Malhotra when the latter was caught by wicketkeeper Pankaj Dharmani at Mumbai’s total of 272.

Opener Sahil Kukreja also contributed a useful 43 for his team. Punjab bowler Amanpreet Singh claimed three vital wickets while giving away 54 runs. Vinayak Mane (20), Rohit Sharma (22) and Ramesh Powar (two) were the ones to be dismissed by the Punjab bowler. The other successful bowler for the hosts were Ishan Malhotra, who picked two wickets.

Saurashtra in trouble

After setting a target of 274 for Saurashtra, Andhra tightened its grip over the hosts by reducing them 127 for 5 on the third and penultimate day at Rajkot. Chasing the stiff target, the Saurashtra batsmen floundered against some tight and accurate Andhra bowling. Experienced Sitanshu Kotak was the only man to put some resistance by making an unbeaten 57. Ravindra Jadeja (3) was giving him company when stumps were drawn for the day. The hosts still needed 147 runs with five wickets in hand. Earlier, resuming at 87 for 4, the visitors were bowled out for 145. Sandip Jobanputra and Rakesh Dhruv took three wickets each.

UP in with a chance

Medium pacer Shalabh Srivastava and Praveen Kumar brought back holders Uttar Pradesh in the match when they sent back top five Karnataka batsmen for 54 runs in the second innings in Kanpur. Karnataka, chasing a target of 122 runs to win the match, need 68 runs with 5 wickets in hand on the final day. Earlier, the visitors earned a valuable lead of 73 runs against the defending champions in first innings by wrapping UP’s second innings on 194. Karnataka’s hopes for a win now pin on veteran Ch Raghu and Sunil Joshi who had scored runs in first innings.

Delhi in driver’s seat

Riding on brilliant batting efforts by Mayank Tehlan (200) and Rajat Bhatia (106), hosts Delhi amassed a massive 249-runs first innings lead against Baroda on the penultimate day  at Ferozeshah Kotla. Baroda, who came up with a disappointing batting effort on the opening day, were 35 for no loss in their second innings at close of play with openers Rishikesh Parab and left-handed Connor Williams surviving the akward 16 overs. Earlier, in reply to Baroda’s first innings total of 244, the Delhi batsmen complimented the admirable job done by their bowlers to rattle up a massive 493.

Patel rap for Gujarat

A sparkling 173 by Neeraj Patel propelled Gujarat to a commanding 406 against Hyderabad, who were struggling at 63 for 2, after conceding a massive first innings lead of 201 runs in Hyderabad. The hosts scored 205 in the first innings and were 63 for 2 at stumps on the penultimate day in reply to Gujarat’s first inning score of 406. Resuming at overnight score of 225 for 2, Gujarat batsmen Neeraj and Bhavik Thaker took from where they left and added 101 runs before Thaker was stumped by Ibrahim Khaleel off the bowling of P Ojha for a well made 56. Thaker’s 56 came off 136 balls.

Haryana gain big lead

Spinner Gaurav Vaishisht starred with a superb six-wicket haul to help Haryana gain a crucial first innings lead of 118 runs over Tamil Nadu in Chennai. The hosts were dismissed for 169 in their first innings. The Tamil Nadu batsmen failed to stand up to offspinner Gaurav who bagged his wickets for just 20 runs in 20.5 overs of which 13 were maidens.
