The Board is looking to absolve itself of the kind of mess that the Pakistan Cricket Board now confronts in the wake of its three-man appellate tribunal overturning the bans on Akhtar and Asif on the grounds that the players had been unaware of the precise dictates of WADA.
Baroda pyhsio Dr Usman confirmed on the sidelines of the Baroda-Delhi Ranji tie at the Kotla that he had indeed received a copy of the WADA code and the list of banned substances. The BCCI secretary Niranjan Shah’s office has e-mailed the concerned documents to all its affiliate units in the first week of December itself while for less net savvy associations like the DDCA, the same have been couriered.
The BCCI is focussing on educating players from the domestic circuit matches onward so that no one inadvertently consumes a substance that could result in the Board losing face when they face subsequent tests on international debut. The quick response of the Board takes a proactive measure towards ensuring that in the future no Indian player can avail of the same loophole that allowed Akhtar and Asif to escape doping related sanctions.
PCB chairman Naseem Ashraf refused to comment on WADA and ICC reservations regarding the reversal of the ban on his players.
“We consider that matter closed,” was his firm assertion.
