LONDON: Zara Phillips, the Queen’s granddaughter, has become the first British royal to ever appear in an advertisement, printed in a slew of this morning’s Sunday papers.

Dressed in a mud-splashed white Roberto Cavalli dress with a plunging neckline, the 25-year-old daughter of Princess Anne has endorsed Land Rover’s 4x4 mini jeep — a great favourite among the trendy British aristocracy and commonly dubbed as Chelsea tractors.

Phillips, who became a world champion in show jumping in August this year and is a hot favourite for the BBC’s Sports Personality of the Year to be announced on Sunday night, has been sponsored by Land Rover for her horsing events. Land Rover pick up the estimated £5,00,000 cost of maintaining seven of Phillips’ horses as part of their sponsorship of the royal.

The advertisement is headlined ‘Beautifully poised’ and has a picture of Phillips sitting on a period, two-seat sofa in what could be mistaken as Buckingham Palace. It was shot three weeks ago by Mary McCartney, daughter of ex-Beatle Sir Paul McCartney, at Winston Churchill’s former Home, the Templeton Estate in Roehampton, Surrey.

Though 11th in line to the British throne, Phillips’ father Mark Phillips, Princess Anne’s first husband was a commoner. Following in her parents foot-steps, Phillips is a sports-mad, down-to-earth young lady.

She lives with fiance Mike Tindall, the England rugby player and receives no money from the civil list which finances many of the other royals. Princess Anne gives Zara free accommodation and Land Rover, betting firm Cantor Index and Rolex sponsor her professional show jumping.

While the advertisement may raise some eyebrows, she has received support from an unexpected quarter. Ian Davidson, a Labour MP and outspoken critic of the royal family said, “Miss Phillips is to be commended for making her own way in the world.” Land Rover said of the advertisement “This is part of our long-standing support of her. We will be doing another ad with her next year that sees her in action as a three-day eventer.”

Buckingham Palace commented, “She doesn’t carry out official duties. How she runs her career is her own affair.”
