LONDON: NRI steel baron Lakshmi Mittal has been named as one of the 10 contenders for the Business Person of the Year finding himself in the company of people like media tycoon Rupert Murdoch and John McAdam of ICI.

The 10 candidates have been chosen by the business team of The Sunday Times for transforming their companies in the last one year into something new and valuable and “working magic on very unpromising subjects.” Mittal, Britain’s richest man, has been chosen for this year’s contest thanks to his “audacious” bid for rival Arcelor and succeeding in creating the largest steel group ever, controlling 10 per cent of the world’s production.

Another steel magnate who is a contender for the title is Philippe Varin or Corus. Varin took over Corus in 2002 when the Anglo-Dutch steelmaker was going through a rough patch. Th e Frenchman has been commended for putting Corus’ house back in order and manoeuvring the company into a position where it is now the subject of rival £5 billion takeover bids from Tata Steel and the Brazilian group CSN. The only woman in the list is Clara Furse, the chief executive of the London Stock Exchange who has successfully fended off bids from rivals and presided over a boom in business.

The title first constituted in 2002 named Eliot Spitzer, New York attorney-general as its winner that year. Since then the elite band include Sir Ken Morrison, Chairman of Wm Morrison, Steve Jobs, chief executive of Apple, and Sergey Brin and Larry Page, the founders of Google who were last year’s winners.

While readers have been urged to send in their views on who should become the Business Person of the Year, The Sunday Times business team will chose the eventual winner which will be announced in the newspaper on the 31st of December.
