CHENNAI: Santa Claus did not come to Dr Prakash on the Christmas-eve of 2001. Chennai police did. The orthopaedic physician, evidently more into flesh than bones, was arrested for shooting blue films in his ‘studio’ on the city outskirts. If a doctor was an unlikely candidate for making porn clips, the professionals are now stepping in, five years later.

A bunch of self-proclaimed film-makers, who had a good run making soft porn movies in Malayalam and Tamil for the last ten years, have now become content providers for x-rated websites hosted in servers abroad. While the soft porn industry in the south is facing a severe crisis, the huge demand for “authentic Indian aunties” and “dazzling desi girls” on porn websites is the new lure.

Till 2004, soft porn movies made in Malayalam and dubbed into several Indian languages had a huge following. The late 1990s saw the emergence of Shakeela as the new ‘southern sex bomb’ after Silk Smitha. In 2000, she had more movies than Malayalam superstars Mohanlal and Mammootty.  Shakeela’s exit dealt a blow to these sleaze engineers.

“After Shakeela’s exit, a couple of other girls started exposing too much, which quelled the curiosity factor that had driven the soft porn industry. There were as many as 75 soft porn movies made with less than Rs 10 lakh each and earning five times the profit. Now, there are hardly 10 such movies a year. Providing content for websites is not very lucrative, but it helps us tide over the crisis,” says a film-maker who was “producer, director and cameraman” of many porn movies in Malayalam.

Hiding under the canopy of Kollywood, the parallel porn industry is never short of resources. Aspiring directors, actors and cameramen who swarm Kollywood and “shady producers” who are out to make a fast buck, find it a way of sustenance till their mainstream dreams are realised.

A blue-film maker told DNA that hours of porn clips are made for a few tens of thousands of rupees. There are designated bungalows and ‘shooting homes’ around Kodambakkam which are hired out for a day of hectic, hot work. The content is transmitted digitally or as CDs to the websites hosted in the US through East Asian countries like Malaysia and Singapore.

After the promulgation of the Information Technology Act in 2001, the Tamil Nadu police constituted a cyber cell to deal with online crime, but police officers say they can do very little when the websites are hosted in other countries.
