AHMEDABAD: Bouyed by the sales of locally developed battery-run 'Yo Bykes', Gujarat-based Electrotherm India Ltd is planning to launch a "hi-speed" version of the two-wheelers by March 2007.

"We have sold more than 10,000 Yo Bykes in Gujarat since we had launched six models of this battery-operated two-wheeler in February this year," Avinash Bhandari, director of the company said here on Friday.

Encouraged by the results in Gujarat, the company also launched these two-wheelers in six other states. These were Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh, he said, adding the company has sold a total of 16,000 units across India.

"We will also be launching a hi-speed version of battery operated two-wheeler by March next year," he said.

These vehicles will have a battery power of 600 watts as compared to the 250 watts in existing models and can reach a speed of about 60 km/per hour from the present 25 kmph.

"The vehicle will be able to seat two persons and carry a maximum payload of 150 kilograms," Bhandari said, adding that Yo Bykes currently in market can carry only 75 kgs.

The new vehicle is expected to cost more than Rs 35,000 when it hits the roads next year. The present models costs anywhere between Rs 16,000 to Rs 28,000.

Bhandari added the company was planning to sell the current models of bikes, which was most popular among housewives, working women and school-going children, in eastern and southern parts of India.

"We will also be launching these vehicles in eight other states in east and south India," he added.
