Attractive offers, lucky draws and great prizes ensure Mumbaikars are out shopping in the festive season.

With the festive season at its peak, the city of excess is splurging like there’s no tomorrow. And businesses are ensuring that shoppers intent on spending big bucks on their Diwali shopping are not disappointed. "This is a great time to pick the best of goodies along with some great festive offers," says call centre executive Siddharth Benipuri. This young professional, a regular at the Raghuleela Mall in Kandivali, claims to have spent nearly Rs80,000 on clothes and electronics since the festive season started.

Manufacturers and shopping complexes have swung into top gear, doling attractive offers to woo customers. "There are more offers than discounts since brands don’t intend selling products that are cheaper than what their rivals are selling," points out Devang Sampat, marketing general manager, Eternity Mall, Thane. Instead, manufacturers are introducing newer products along with promotional tie-ups with other brands and special schemes with credit card companies that offer interest-free loans. "Some offers are just too hard to resist," says Pooja Kapoor, who got a DVD player as a free gift when she bought a refrigerator and TV set from an electronic shop at Centre One Mall, Vashi.

Then there are lucky draws, live concerts and fashion shows planned at malls across the city to humour the cash-spending crowds. Businesses are also encouraging shoppers to spend more by luring them with a chance to win not just all-expense-paid vacations but also automobiles and electronic goods. Consumers, who are busy stocking up on the goodies, are only too happy to be catered to. "I keep all my major shopping for Diwali since there is so much more on offer," says Varsha Dua, a regular at Infiniti Mall, Andheri.

It comes as no surprise that malls in the city are expecting a bright Diwali. "We see an average increase of nearly 20 per cent in turnover during the festival season, but this year it looks as if the numbers will go up even further," says T Anupam, head of Inorbit Mall, Malad.
