It is tough if you are a distant education learner registered with Mumbai University. Nearly 40,000 students complain that the delay by the institute to provide them with the study material, inclusive of the syllabus, has left them in lurch.

“We are already into the mid-academic period, but without a syllabus. I could manage to get the study material of just two subjects. The study material of four more subjects as well as with their syllabus is yet to come. If I can’t study lessons in advance, it will be difficult to score good marks in the final exam which is just four months away,” said Nilesh Lokare, a first-year degree student at the University of Mumbai’s Institute of Distance Education.

The authorities admit that they are yet to get over 4 lakh books printed. Students say that this is nothing new and asserted that this was a regular feature.

“We are tensed. Without the syllabus, how do we study and appear for the exams? The Mumbai University has discriminated between regular students and correspondence students. Regular students have been provided with the syllabus and reference books as per the academic schedule,” said Sachin Ghadge, a postgraduate student.

Some students told DNA that they had been informed by the distance education staff that they would not be able to supply them with the study-material and nor the syllabus this academic year. Director SD Pawar, meanwhile, has said students will get the materials in a month or two.

He said: “We have been printing books for 200 subjects at the under-graduate and postgraduate level. We have not yet received the approved list of books to be printed from the controller of university’s printing press. It’s only after receiving the approved list, we can send the books for printing. Students waiting for the availability of books desperately may have to face the trouble due to delay on the part of the controller of university’s printing press.”
