Afghan governor escapes assassination

A provincial governor escaped an assassination attempt in eastern Afghanistan on Saturday but a colleague was killed in the early morning attack involving bombing and gunfire.

JALALABAD: A provincial governor escaped an assassination attempt in eastern Afghanistan on Saturday but a colleague was killed in the early morning attack involving bombing and gunfire.

The governor of the eastern province of Laghman, Gulab Mangal, said a bomb struck the first vehicle of his convoy in which he had been in the second.

As the occupants disembarked to assess the damage, they came under small arms fire, Mangal said.

"A bomb struck under our front vehicle. Then we had some shots and our friend was hit," he said. "I was in the second vehicle."

The dead man was an administration official.

Mangal could not say who might have been behind the attack. Laghman, which adjoins the capital province, has seen several incidents related to the Taliban-led insurgency and rivalry between local officials.

Three senior district officials were killed in a similar attack in the neighbouring province of Nangarhar earlier in this week.

And the respected governor of the eastern Paktia province was assassinated in a suicide bombing last month, becoming the first governor to be killed since the Taliban were toppled in 2001.

The Taliban said it had carried out the attack on governor Hakim Taniwal.
