Suicide sparks protests in Jammu, police arrest the headmaster

SRINAGAR: The temple city of Jammu erupted with anger following the suicide of a class 9 student, after he was allegedly humiliated by the school principal for not depositing fees for the last two months.

Jatinder Singh of the Harminder Public School, Nanak Nagar, was found hanging from the ceiling fan of his home by his family members .

The boy and his brother Amandeep had been summoned by the school principal Kirtan Singh during school hours. He then allegedly humiliated them for not depositing fees, while Amandeep was also severely beaten, family sources said.

Unable to bear the humiliation, Jatinder rushed home and locked himself in a room. When he did not respond to the repeated knocks on the door, the family members broke down the door. They found him hanging from the ceiling and rushed him to the hospital, where he was declared brought dead.

Violent protests broke out in Jammu division after the news of the suicide spread. Protesters blocked the Jammu Delhi highway and staged a dharna. A violent mob even ransacked the house of the school principal, and pelted stones at the school.

The police have registered a case and arrested the principal from his residence. “We have lodged an FIR and the principal will be charged for the crime soon,” said Mukesh Singh, Senior Superintendent of Police, Jammu.

Singh said the protesters have dispersed after the police took prompt action against the principal. “There were some protests and people were very angry. They even ransacked some houses and the school. They mellowed down and dispersed after we arrested the principal,” he said.

Meanwhile, the J&K government has ordered an independent probe into the episode. The state has sealed the school until further orders and students have been asked to attend a nearby government school.
