With a rare penchant to swim with the sharks, Assistant Police Inspector with the city traffic branch BR Ghadge has crossed the Strait of Gibraltar for a record fifth time. On September 13, he became the guy with the highest number of crosses on the strait.

Ghadge crossed the nearly 26-km stretch in six hours. The 45-year-old policeman was accompanied by his elder brother Vinod in the swimming expedition, which started at around 2pm from the Punta Tarifa coast in Spain and reached the Benzu Bay coast in Morocco around 8pm.

The Starit of Gibraltar Swimming Association was quick to acknowledge his feat. Ghadge had earlier crossed the Strait of Gibraltar for the fourth time in 2002 in 6 hours and 10 minutes, for which he was awarded the King of Gibraltar title.

He has participated in many international sports events like the Marathon in Greece in 2000 and 2001. He won the international swimming competition organised by the Indian Navy in 2001.

“The Strait of Gibraltar is very difficult to cross as waters from the Mediterranean sea and the Atlantic ocean meet here.

The water temperature of the Atlantic is very low and can go down to 10 degrees Celsius, whereas the Mediterranean water is around 25 degrees, which can cause muscle cramps. Also, Killer Whales and Blue Sharks are found here, which can be dangerous for a swimmer,” said Ghadge.

“I was accompanying a young girl Samrin Qureshi, who trained under me and wanted to swim across the Strait of Gibraltar, but she did not get the visa. I went there with my elder brother.” His eyes are now set on the Palk Strait.
