BUDAPEST: More than 150 people were injured in clashes in Budapest between security forces and right-wing demonstrators calling for the resignation of Prime Minister Ferenc Gyurcsany, the emergency services said.

"We estimate the number of injured at more than 150, including 125 who needed treatment," said a spokesman for the emergency services, Pal Gyorfi, on MTV national television. He said one person, a policeman, was seriously injured in the head. He had undergone surgery and was in a stable condition.

A total of 102 members of the security forces were injured in the demonstrations in Budapest's Szabadsag Square, where the national television headquarters is located, a police official, Arpad Szabadfi Arpad, said on MTV.

Demonstrators went on rampage early Tuesday to call for Gyurcsany's resignation over his admission that he had lied to voters to win re-election.

Police managed to empty the square at around 4:00 am, leaving burnt-out cars, ripped-up benches and overturned rubbish bins.
