NEW DELHI: The CPI will discuss the UPA government's performance on the economic and political fronts and work out its strategy for the forthcoming assembly polls in four states at its two-day National Executive meet beginning in New Delhi on Monday.

The party will discuss the government's performance over the past two years vis-à-vis the implementation of "pro-people" commitments made in the Common Minimum Programme, including steps taken to stem price rise and the crisis in the agricultural sector.

The Left parties have asked the government to carry forward the composite dialogue and peace process with Pakistan, and the CPI will deliberate the outcome of the parleys Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had with President Pervez Musharraf in Havana on Saturday.

The National Executive meeting comes in the backdrop of the Left parties deciding to explore the possibility of contesting the polls on a joint platform.

The decision was taken at a recent meeting of the four parties in view of the CPI-M and the CPI contesting elections on different platforms, as was witnessed in the last elections in Bihar.

The CPI leadership will deliberate on the assessment of its units on the prevailing political situation in the states going to the polls, party national secretary D Raja said.

The party's policy-making body will be briefed by the Manipur unit on the upcoming elections in the state where it has five legislators in a 60-member House. CPI General Secretary A B Bardhan had attended the unit's meeting in Imphal a few days ago.

In Punjab and Uttaranchal, the party's motto would be to defeat the BJP-led NDA.

The CPI had contested the last elections in Punjab in alliance with the Congress and won two seats. But now it does not seem to be happy with the alliance, especially due to major differences over economic measures pursued by the government of Chief Minister Amrinder Singh.

As Uttar Pradesh is also slated to go to the polls, the CPI has joined the Jan Morcha backed by former Prime Minister V P Singh which has unleashed a campaign against the ruling Samajwadi Party that has an alliance with the CPI-M.

The National Executive will also make a detailed review of progress made in expanding the party's base in Hindi-speaking states and identify issues that can be taken up for the campaign to achieve this.
