MUMBAI: It was more like a scene from a Bollywood film. Cops chased criminals in a screeching car in the dead of the night.

Acting on information, Mumbai police arrested two out of five persons involved in an intra-state stolen car racket. The criminals were trying to make a getaway, but they eventually abandoned the car and tried to escape on foot before being apprehended by the police.

The car chase that went on for more than 15 minutes, climaxed with the bust of the car thief gang.

The two members arrested were identified as Shakeel Ansari alias Anees and Santosh Singh. Three members are still absconding. The police control room tipped off their counterparts about a Maruti Swift that was moving around in a suspicious manner. The Nehru Nagar police gave chase and laid a trap.

The police source said that despite prompting them several time to stop, the car kept speeding ahead. The criminal’s car finally  moved towards the Wadala Truck Terminus area. The police patrolling vehicle  overtook the car.

Within minutes, one of the criminals alighted and made a run for it, but was soon apprehended.

During preliminary interrogation, the duo have confessed that the car was stolen from the parking lot of Johnson and Johnson at Bhandup. The duo confirmed that they were part of an intra-state gang involved in more than a dozen car thefts in Mumbai and neighbouring areas.

"This has proven to be a good catch and we are expecting recovery of several stolen cars," said Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone-VI) Niket Kaushik. An investigating officer claimed that the gang followed a unique modus operandi and sold these cars with the help of fake documents in the North East and Bihar.
