LUCKNOW: All catholic schools in the city remained shut on Monday to protest the alleged attack by some BJP youth wing activists on Loreto convent school where a séance was held, even as some protestors arrested during the ruckus were granted bail.

"All the 16 catholic schools in the city remained closed in protest against yesterday's attack," state Catholic Association secretary Father Paul Rodrigues said.

“Security personnel remained deployed in strength around all missionary schools as a precautionary measure,” police said.

“The three BJP youth wing workers, arrested last evening on charges of ransacking and damaging school office and properties were released on bail,” they added.

The BJP supporters accused the girls' convent of converting its students.

The District Magistrate has appointed a three-member committee to conduct a probe into allegations by parents that some students fainted during a session held inside the school premises on September 6 to invoke the spirit of Jesus Christ.

The parents complained that the séance was reportedly witnessed by hundreds of students, besides staff members.

However, the school authorities denied holding a séance and said few students had fainted during a prayer session, where participation was voluntary, due to the sultry weather.

Rodrigues said the association would hold an emergency meeting in Allahabad on September 20 to discuss the attack and formulate its next strategy.

Condemning the attack on Loreto, Congress leader Pramod Tiwari said, "What the BJP protestors have done borders on hooliganism and terrorism."
