NEW DELHI: The National Human Rights Commission has taken suo motu cognizance of reports on the death of Professor HS Sabharwal in Ujjain and sought a report from the Madhya Pradesh Government.

The human rights panel has asked the state chief secretary and director general of police to look into the matter and send a report to it within 15 days, the NHRC said on Wednesday.

The commission, after going through the contents of press reports about the death of Sabharwal, noted that if they were true, they raise the issue of serious violation of human rights of the citizens.

Sabharwal had died on August 26 after he was allegedly manhandled by students while supervising a student's union election at Madhav College in Ujjain.

The commission took cognizance of media reports that the police at the site did not take action to save the teachers.

The NHRC noted it had received a complaint from the deceased's son Himanshu on the incident, alleging the police had tampered with evidence and were protecting the guilty.
