NEW DELHI: Indian designers on Sunday received an open invitation from organisers of Miami Fashion Week to participate in their annual fashion show for exhibiting their talent in the international arena.

"We have had eight Indian designers participating in our event in 2004-05, who have done very well. We introduced them to buyers and helped them at every stage," Sobol Fashion Productions Inc President Beth Sobol said at the Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week.

However, participating at the Miami Fashion week would be a difficult endeavour for new designers since it has very exacting conditions for a designer to qualify in.

"A designer participating at the Miami Fashion week needs to be in business for at least two years and put together two collections every year, with each collection comprising 40 pieces. We are very careful about the quality, as buyers from around the world, who come to Miami Fashion week are particular about quality," Sobol said.

Indian designers need to be very careful while dealing with the US and European markets, she said.

"US is very unforgiving. If a person makes a mistake, it takes lot of time to get back their reputation. So, designers must make sure that they deliver on time, are careful about the size and give the stores exactly what they ordered".

But, Indian designers would have to adapt itself to the Western sensibilities in order to attract buyers and anything too exotic would not make a desirable impact. "Nothing too ethnic. Clothes have to be designed on the Western mode".

The Miami show was a trade show and not a press show and designers would not have stalls to display their goods, she added.
