UJJAIN: BJP's student wing ABVP had vehemently protested cancellation of elections in Ujjain's Madhav College last week and in the violence that followed, Prof Sabahrwal was beaten up. The 60-year-old professor of political science died on the spot after grievous injuries to his rib bones and lungs on Saturday.

Several students had been arrested by the police in this case, but none were charged with attempt to murder or murder under section 302.

Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan was summoned by Governor Dr Balram Jakhar to the Raj Bhawan on Thursday morning where the two had a long meeting. Governor and chancellor of universities Dr Jakhar had earlier written to the state government to look into the issue seriously and act swiftly.

The CM had, on Tuesday, ordered a CID probe into the professor's death that has evoked a nation-wide outrage. However, much before the CID probe was concluded, Chauhan landed himself in trouble by stating that the killing of the professor allegedly at the hands of the ABVP students was "not a murder but an accident".

Realising his mistake and working under tremendous pressure from the media, the CM on Thursday morning declared that the police would book two ABVP leaders----Vimal Tomar and ABVP state chief Shashiranjan Singh----under section 302 of the IPC.

‘I've written to the Prez for justice’

Describing as "eyewash" the police probe into the death of his father in an attack during college elections, Himanshu Sabharwal on Thursday said that he has sent a petition to President APJ Abdul Kalam and plans to move the Supreme Court with a plea for justice. Sabharwal was also planning to approach the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) with the plea. "I have written to the President seeking justice," said the aggrieved son of Prof HS Sabharwal. "Police action is eyewash. State government is trying to shelter the accused," he said. "Even CID probe into the incident is inadequate as it is a state government's arm". "I will also file a special leave petition before the Supreme Court on Friday and approach NHRC, seeking justice in the case," he added.
