UJJAIN (Madhya Pradesh): As protests gained pace against the attack on teachers during college elections here, a key eye-witness to the incident on Wednesday expressed fear that he might be implicated in the case.

"Police have been very harsh in interrogating me. I fear that I might be trapped in the murder case," Komal Singh Sengar, the peon who claimed to have witnessed students beating up the professors, thereby leading to death of H S Sabharwal at Madhav College on August 26, told reporters here.

The murder case was registered on the complaint of Sengar, who was being presently getting treated at a hospital for some medical complications.

However, Superintendent of Police Jaideep Prasad refuted the charges, saying, "we have not been brutal in interrogation. There is no intention to trap him".

"Sengar has been giving confusing statements. If he has names of those involved in the murder, he should give them to us so that we can arrest the accused", the SP said, adding that apart from police, he will also be interrogated by a magistrate conducting a probe and the CID sleuths.

Following Sabharwal's death and post-mortem report confirming that his two ribs were broken and lungs bleeding, protests gained pace from different quarters including the Congress and College Teachers' Associations across the state.

The government had suspended three police officers including city Superintendent of Police Manoj Singh, for dereliction of duty, while a CID probe has been ordered, along with the ongoing magisterial inquiry, sources said.

The peon said the academic was attacked by a mob of 25-30 people and no one came forward to help him.

Sengar said there was a bespectacled man in the crowd who abused Professor Sabharwal and instigated others to attack him.
