NEW DELHI: On Wednesday, taekwondo player Sangeeta Sharma — who hails from Gurgaon — accused her coach, Subhas Yogi of raping her in Jhunjhunu, Rajasthan, where she used to train at the local club run by the coach.

The Rajasthan police is investigating the case and meanwhile, the Taekwondo Federation of India (TFI) has asked the Rajasthan Taekwondo Association to take strict action against Yogi. Incidentally, the Rajasthan unit is being headed by a policeman, Upendra Bharadwaj, who is an IG there.

Surender Rai Bhanduria, the TFI in charge of north India and a senior vice-president of the Delhi Taekwondo Association, told DNA after the case was registered on Wednesday that they had contacted the state body to take action against Yogi. “We have already asked them to take tough actions against Yogi, to ensure that such incidents don’t take place in the future,” he said.

Bhanduria said that the “victim” used to regularly travel to Jhunjhunu to train at the Yogi Taekwondo Club run by the coach but the TFI was a bit surprised that the case was registered by the woman player after six months. “The incident occurred six months ago but the report was made today.”

However, TFI officials were not sure about Sangeeta’s status as a player. “We checked our record today but couldn’t find any details about her. A section in the media had reported that she was a gold medalist but it does not exist in the TFI record. Maybe she had won at an Open championship,” said Bhanduria.

The TFI official also said that Yogi was not associated with the All India body in any manner. “We (TFI) have no involvement with him as player, coach or referee. He was given recognition by the Rajasthan Association.” Bhanduria added that in the past also, they had received complaints against Yogi. “Last year, some parents complained to us that Yogi had charged excess money from their children for participating in a tournament.”
