NEW DELHI: In the grip of an unprecedented security blanket and a flurry of intelligence warnings about possible terrorist attacks, India is celebrating the 60th Independence Day. Venues for Independence Day functions, airports, national monuments, and nuclear installations were the focus of security arrangements.

Intelligence agencies have over the past few days warned of threats from human bombs, explosives mounted on unmanned aerial vehicles and road vehicles, liquid bombs, and other unconventional means of attacks. These strikes, the agencies believe, could be carried out by any of the Kashmiri terrorist groups, North East insurgents or Naxals.

A senior intelligence official told DNA that he was convinced that "the country's interiors and northeast" were more vulnerable to attacks than Delhi and Mumbai. The two metros are wrapped under an unprecedented security blanket.

The Capital city would be a no fly zone during the entire first half of August 15 when the Prime Minister and other dignitaries would drive down to Red Fort. Numerous anti-aircraft guns and several dozen "spotters", intelligence operatives from around the country who can spot probable terrorists, would be among the many security teams. Intelligence sources said they fear the worst in the naxal-affected areas given the "weakness of the security grid and impossibility of securing such a massive spread of area."  This year the situation has been complicated by revelations in London last week that various innocuous chemicals could be mixed to create deadly explosives.

Ring of steel around PM

This Independence Day when Prime Minister Manmohan Singh unfurls the national flag from the ramparts of the Red Fort, some 500 specially trained security personnel would throw a ring around him.

This force, requisitioned for the first time, has been drawn from the Special Protection Group (SPG), National Security Guard (NSG), Indo Tibetan Police Border Police (ITBP), and Delhi police's PM security cell. The inner most layer would consist of the SPG and NSG.
