BHOPAL: It was a manic Monday for residents of Bhopal. As many as 12 persons were reported dead and a large number went missing in Bhopal on Monday as torrential rains lashed the MP capital. Elsewhere in the state also, rains played havoc on Sunday, according to reports reaching the state capital.

Places like Harda, Khandwa, Hoshangabad, Balaghat, Indore and Khargone received heavy rains and the resultant floods threw normal life out of gear causing huge damage to the property of lakhs of people across Madhya Pradesh. Official sources said that initial estimates suggested a loss of over 50 crores in the city.

Insurance company offices were flooded with people filing claims for  compensation. Rain water gushed into homes and shops of posh colonies like Arera Colony, Char Imli, Shivaji Nagar, Machana Colony, though deaths were mainly reported from the slum areas. A large number of trains were stopped outside Bhopal as the rail line was completely submerged under water. The tarmac at Raja Bhoj Airport of Bhopal was full of water for hours on Monday morning resulting in delay in flights.

An ex-gratia compensation of Rs 1 lakh to the next of the kin of the deceased has been announced by the district administration.

Met office sources told the DNA that Monday's rains broke the record of 80 years' rainfall in Bhopal. The unceasing rains on Monday reminded people of the 26/7 scenario as the city looked like mini-Mumbai in the many low-lying areas which were marooned, thanks to the choked nullahs and absence of any disaster management plan.
