Gujarat fears overflow from MP

GANDHINAGAR/SURAT: As heavy rainfall drenched Rajasthan, Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh on Monday, a high alert was sounded in Gujarat due to the fear that the irrigation department might again have to release water to save the dams in the state. Reports claim that there has been heavy rainfall in the catchment areas of Sabarmati in Rajasthan, Tapi, Narmada, Vatrak, Shedhi and other small rivers in Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra. There are possibilities of these rivers being flooded and Ukai, Kadana, Vanakbori, Panam, Damanganga, and other dams are being closely monitored by the irrigation department.

Around one lakh cusecs water was released from Indira Sagar dam following heavy rainfall in the catchment areas of Narmada river in Madhya Pradesh. The water level in Narmada is still rising and will reach the danger level of 123 meters on Wednesday if the rains continue. People residing in the low-lying areas of the region have been notified to move to safer locations.

Meanwhile, the death toll in Surat crossed the 300-mark on Monday, but according to the Gujarat government the death toll is still only 70. Dissident BJP MP from Surat Kashiram Rana alleged lack of co-ordination between various government agencies in relief work. Talking to reporters, urban development minister I K Jadeja said around 14,000 tonne of solid waste has been lifted from the affected areas in the last 24 hours. The minister was unable to give any convincing replies when asked to name some of the areas which had been completely cleaned.

The situation in Surat is fast returning to normal. Some of the affected shops in various areas, and several textile shops in the Ring road area started functioning on Monday. Many private offices in different areas also opened this morning.

Almost ten lakh people have been examined in seven zones of the city, and medical treatment provided to around 25,000, so far. More than eight lakh chlorine tablets have been distributed in the affected areas.
