MUMBAI: Security has been stepped up at the country's premier nuclear organization, the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, with deployment of the elite National Security Guards for the first time, following intelligence inputs of a possible terrorist attack and in view of the threat perception for Independence Day, security officials said.

"Following inputs of a possible terrorist strike from central intelligence agencies, movements have been restricted within the Anushakti Nagar colony as well as inside BARC," security agencies, operating inside the BARC, said.

"In addition to BARC security (without arms), Central Industrial Security Force, Mumbai Police, NSG and Army personnel are posted inside BARC," they said.

NSG was deployed in view of the Independence Day threat perception, while the CISF was deployed replacing State Reserve Police from June 1, they said.

The security officials said all gates to Anushakti Nagar are closed, except for two main gates for the scrutiny of more than 12,000 employees as well as more than 1,000 contract workers.

"Not affecting scientific work, we are checking material going in and coming out and although this is routine for BARC security, with the threat, it is done using various possible methods," they said.

Asked about a private school Nutan Vidyamandir, within the BARC colony, the security authorities said the school was closed on Friday and will reopen on Monday "since we have closed all doors to the colony and everyone, including students have to enter the colony only through the main gates."

BARC Director S Banerjee said security was tightened and "scientists and BARC staff are cooperating."

On checking of godowns and stores in BARC, Banerjee said, "it is a normal procedure of clearing unwanted things from the store and since the new security agencies are inside the institution, they may be asking for a check up and we are fully cooperating with them."

Alertness level in all the institutions within Anushakti Colony is kept high and security reviews are carried out almost everyday, Banerjee said.

"Our scientific work will not get affected although there may be some delay and inconvenience for people coming inside everyday," he added.
