If you are looking for a good getaway package for the upcoming long weekend (August 12-15), pack an overnight bag, pick up your passport and head to the international airport. You will join many other Mumbaikars who have opted for popular international destinations such as Malaysia, Singapore, Sri Lanka and Bangkok for a great holiday.

These weekends come with attractive price tags that start as low as Rs14,000 and are inclusive of  return airfare, airport transfers, meals and accommodation.

According to industry experts, destinations like Singapore, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Bangkok and Mauritius are fast emerging as popular weekend hotspots due to easy accessibility from Indian metros and cheap airfares.

They add that these packages go down well with families and young travellers who want quick and economic holiday solutions.

“Over the last few years, we have seen a rising demand for such weekend getaways, especially among young people who want to take a quick break,” says Dimuthu Tennakoon, country manager, Gujarat and Maharashtra, Sri Lankan Airlines.

The airline offers several special packages as part of its promotion for the upcoming tri-series in Sri Lanka.

The cricket matches and the Sri Lankan Kandy Perahera Festival are expected to push tourist arrivals up by 20 per cent this August, as compared to the same time last year, says Maadhuri Verma, destination manager, Sri Lanka Tourist Board.

Tourism boards are also tying up with airlines to bring in the tourists. So, one can grab a four-day holiday to Singapore and Malaysia for as little as Rs17,000.

“With the approaching long weekend, we expect close to 6,000-7,000 Indian travellers to visit Malaysia,” said Roslan Abdullah, director, Tourism Malaysia.

Similarly, one can hop over to Mauritius for a five-day break for around Rs32,000 per person.

“Tour operators these days offer great value-for-money options. A great bargain is a necessity for a working professional like me as I have time and money constraints,” says Lakshmi Vaidyanathan, who recently visited Singapore and Malaysia on a five-day tour.
“As people get busier, these short international breaks come as the perfect holiday option. Everything including tickets, visas and sight-seeing is planned out for you. Moreover, all of it is available at extremely reasonable rates,” says Lalit Sheth, CMD of Raj Travels, which has registered heavy international travel bookings for the long weekend.
